In 1979, Pioneer Pete became Oakland University's first mascot, serving until 1999 when the university's athletic teams transitioned from the NCAA Division II Pioneers to the Division I Golden Grizzlies. Although The Grizz was officially recognized as the first mascot, Pioneer Pete had been supporting student athletes since the 1950s until his retirement in 1999.
