In 1946-47, the Boston Celtics started their first season in the BAA/NBA, thanks to Walter A. Brown, who was also involved with the Boston Bruins and the Boston Garden arena. Brown chose the name "Celtics" to appeal to the city's Irish American community. John Davis "Honey" Russell was hired as the first coach, and the team lost their first game to the Providence Steamrollers but won their first game against the Toronto Huskies on November 16, 1946.
